Sri Lanka

meet buddhists and hindus; ask if they’re sponsored by orange!

Known as ‘The Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, Sri Lanka is home to some incredible sights such as the old city of kings at Anuradhapura and the cave temples of Dambulla. Enjoy palm-lined beaches and green tea plantations, visit an elephant orphanage and take a bicycle tour through the ruins of Polonnaruwa. Experience a night in a luxurious tent camp near Tanamalwila and explore on an adventurous jeep safari through the Yala National Park.
  • • Relax on the beach Relax and get in tune with the tropics here in Marawila. You’ll be treated to a boat tour through the coconut groves and be able to taste palm wine and arrack, the local cognac made of cashew or coconut. «
  • • Ancient capital of the country Kandy is built around the sacred site of the Tooth Temple of Lord Buddha and it is here in this well guarded shrine that the most revered object of the island is kept and it was said that who holds the Buddha’s tooth, holds sway over the island. «
  • • Massive lion paws Drive through tropical hill country to Sigiriya, a perfect base to explore the spectacular rock fortress guarded by two massive lion paws and home to beautiful frescos of Apsaras or celestial nymphs. «
  • • Washing elephants Visit the elephant orphanage at Pinnawela and enjoy the little ones taking a bath (you can join in under the guidance of the mahouts) and don’t forget to visit the lush botanical gardens of Peradeniya and enjoy a traditional dance show in the evening, complete with fire walking. «
  • • Polonnaruwa by bike The ancient city of Polonnaruwa is littered with statues and ruins and is best explored by bicycle before visiting Anuradhapura, the Buddhist world’s most holy place, the next day. «
  • • Safaris into National Parks Tissamaharama is the starting point for optional safari’s to the Yala or Bundala National Parks where you can encounter elephants, buffaloes, and if you are lucky, a bear or a leopard. Wild peacocks roam free here in abundance. «
