Syria & Jordan

god’s 11th commandment: ‘thou shalt visit mesopotamia!’

Syria and Jordan are countries rich in history like the Roman excavations of Palmyra and Jerash, the fascinating old Nabatean city of Petra, the wadis and crusader fortresses and the bath-houses and oriental bazaars. These may be the lands that time forgot, but the impression they’ll leave on you will be indelible.
  • • Damascus Narrow streets, markets, Koran schools and bath-houses have existed unchanged for centuries. This is a great place to learn to haggle for exotic bargains or relax in one of the coffee houses. «
  • • Labyrinthine alleys in Aleppo Aleppo is a town famous for its colourful market halls, labyrinthine alleys and traditional workshops. Here the surroundings invariably evoke a romantic atmosphere, where you can step back in time and imagine yourself to be Queen Scheherazade or King Shahryar. «
  • • Into the Desert The oasis city of Palmyra once played an important role on the trade route between China/India and Europe. It also served as a buffer between the Persian and Roman empires and is now one of the most important historical sites in the Middle East. «
  • • Ancient city of Petra Follow the Kings Highway to Petra, the fabled rock city hewn out of flesh-coloured stone in the 4th century BC by the Nabataeans. «
  • • Wooden Water Mills Drive to Hama where the River Orontes meanders through the town centre and the enormous ancient wooden water-wheels groan. «
  • • Wadi Rum Explore Wadi Rum, where you can take a spectacular jeep safari through the landscape of orange and red sandstone formations. You will also spend the night in a traditional Bedouin tent. «
